Winford Dart was the son of Amy L. Dart (née Stover) and John C. Dart. Amy married sea captain John C. Dart, but Winford was born before their marriage. The 1930 U.S. Census shows that it was unknown where Winford was born; that his father was born in Kansas, his mother was born in Nova Scotia, and Amy was born in Pennsylvania; but Winford was, confusingly, listed as Amy's son. John C. Dart was born in Canada. It appears that John Dart adopted Winford, and Winford took his last name; or possibly Winford was the son of another member of the Dart family, whom Amy and John raised as their son.
John C. and Amy Dart had one child together, Geraldine V. Dart. Geraldine married Arthur Louis Sawyer.
John and Amy Dart lived in John's home at 3902 22nd Street in San Francisco, near the corner of Castro, across the street from three homes owned by Robinson Nugent at 3901 through 3917 22nd Street, in which the Nugent and Ducray families lived. Robinson Nugent, his sisters Elizabeth ("Lizzie") and Susan ("Susie"), and their brother James Irwin Nugent lived in two of the homes; their sister Margaret "Maggie" Nugent lived with her husband Justin Frank Ducray in the third home. Amy Dart and Maggie Nugent Ducray were best friends, and were expecting children at the same time: Amy and John's daughter Geraldine was born October 31, 1896, a few months after Maggie's son Justin Nugent DuCray was born on May 29, 1896.
The Darts, Nugents, and Ducrays were like family. When Geraldine married Arthur Louis Sawyer, Geraldine and Arthur moved into a home owned by Robinson Nugent at 515 Hill Street, one block away from the 22nd Street homes of John and Amy, the Nugents, and Ducrays. Sadly, Robinson Nugent passed away in the 515 Hill Street home in January 1930. The 1930 U.S. Census showed that Geraldine and Arthur's 8 year old son Howard was not living with them in 1930; he was living with his grandmother Amy Dart and her son, Howard's uncle Winford, at 1252 2nd Avenue. The 1930 census showed Geraldine and Arthur's baby son George Alvin Sawyer, born June 27, 1929, living with them at 515 Hill Street, and also living in their home was John Nugent, a cousin of the Nugent family.
In the 1930 U.S. Census, Winford was 53 years old, Amy Dart was 72, and her grandson Howard Louis Sawyer was eight years old. They lived in an apartment building Amy owned at 1252 2nd Avenue, near Golden Gate Park. Winford worked as a house painter.
It is unknown what year John C. Dart passed away. San Francisco's 1925 City Directory showed him, with Amy and Geraldine, living at 3901 22nd Street. The 1928 Directory showed Amy as the Widow of John C. Dart, living at 1252 2nd Avenue. However, the 1930 U.S. Census showed her marital status as "Married."
