Betty's ancestors were of native American descent, probably Cherokee. In censuses, they were recorded alternately as black, Mullato, or white. All of her children and some of her grandchildren had dark skin, thin hair , and no facial hair, characteristic of native Americans. Betty's father was in two censuses with the name "Bird", and her uncle Ebenezer was known around town as Hurricane Horse.
Betty and her first husband Joseph Allen were married in Covington, and then were recorded as living on Beale Street in Memphis. Joseph disappeared form the records after 1893, and Betty moved to near Dyersburg, TN with her children. In about 1905, she and her children moved across the River to Tyler, MO.. Her last record was the 1910 census, with second husband Perry Booten.
