Radley Hutchinson Daly of Southport, died peacefully in his home on Tuesday, January 5. Born in Stamford, on August 6, 1925 to Gerald Hutchinson Daly and Marguerite Radley Daly, he was a lifelong Fairfield County resident. He attended the King School in Stamford and studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a year before serving with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial administration from Yale University in 1949. After working as Canadian Marketing Manager for the Vick Chemical Company, he joined the Pepperidge Farm Corporation during the firm's start-up stage where, as Director of Product Development, he was responsible for introducing the cookie line to the company's business. He returned to Yale University in 1968 where he served as a key member of the university's administration, holding positions as the Business Manager of the University Libraries, Associate Librarian for University Libraries, Associate Provost for Personnel, Director of Administrative Services, Associate Secretary of the University and as Deputy Secretary of the University. In 1991, to honor his extraordinary service, Yale created for the first and only time, the rank of University Marshall, which he held until his formal retirement in 1996. For many years afterwards, he continued to serve the university by volunteering for special projects. His lifelong passion was sailing. From an early age, as a competitor, he was a member of many race-winning crews including that of the Nina which won the Newport - Bermuda Race in 1962. He met his wife, the former Patricia Louise Skinner, while he was an instructor at the Pequot Yacht Club in Southport. They were married in 1952 and he shared his passion for the sport with her until her passing in 1991. In his earlier years, he was an avid skier and he traveled extensively throughout his life including trips to Europe, Russia, Africa, the Caribbean, South America and China. He was a quiet leader who volunteered his time generously and without hesitation. Over the years, he served as Commodore of the Pequot Yacht Club, President of the Yale Club of Eastern Fairfield County, President of the Pequot Library, President of the Morys Association and Treasurer of the Yale Sailing Associates. He served as a board member for the Eagle Hill School in Southport, the Walpole Library in Farmington, the Mid-Fairfield Child Guidance Center, the Fairfield Community Chest and gave his time to numerous associations and organizations at Yale. He is survived by his son, Peter H. Daly with his wife, Suzanne E. Daly and their three children, Riley J. Daly, Cole H. Daly and Avalon E. Daly of Sebastopol, Calif.; his daughter, Susan F. Daly of Newport, R.I.; his brother, Gerald R. Daly and his wife, Trudy Daly of South Glastonbury; his sister, Kathleen Fricker of Atlanta, Ga.; as well as his many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield at 11 on Saturday, January 9th. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Radley Daly Scholarship Fund at Yale University, P.O. Box 2038, New Haven, CT 06521. His family plans to hold memorial services in the Spring in Southport and in New Haven. Arrangements are under the direction of the Spear-Miller Funeral Home 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield.
