Ruby Dalton Adkins

GRETNA-Ruby Catherine Dalton Adkins, age 92 of Gretna went to her heavenly rest on Friday, August 26, 2011 at her residence.

Born April 11, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Carter Dalton and Mae Parker Dalton. Mrs. Adkins was predeceased by her husband, Earl C. Adkins, Sr.; two sons, Bobby Adkins, and Donald Adkins; one brother, Ray Dalton; and three sisters, Lillian Bradner, Johnnie Sue Compton, and Irene Gunnell.

Ruby was employed for many years at Dan River Mills prior to her retirement. She lived most of her life in the Climax community, where in addition to caring for her large family she worked in tobacco farming. Ruby will forever be remembered for her wonderful cooking, and her great hospitality. There was always room for one more at the table. She was a member of West End Church of Christ, and enjoyed flowers, music, playing cards, and large family gatherings.

She is survived by three sons, Charles Adkins and wife, Virginia of Keeling, Danny Adkins and wife, Linda of Sutherlin, and Earl Adkins, Jr. and wife, Mary of Chatham; three daughters, Linda Thomas of Gretna, Dianne Rutledge and husband, Wayne of Timberlake, NC, and Susan Conner and husband, Jeff of Chatham; 13 precious grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; a host of special nephews, nieces, and many dedicated friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 29, 2011 at the Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. Ralph Clayton. Burial will follow in the Adkins-McDowell Family Cemetery in Climax.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of her daughter, Linda Thomas, 3185 Boxwood Road, Gretna.

The family suggests, memorials be made to the Gretna, Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, VA 24557 or to Centra Hospice, 3300 Rivermont Av, Lynchburg, VA 24503.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna is assisting the family.
