Richard "Dick" LeRoy Dakins, age 84, of Birchwood, WI died peacefully with his family around him on Monday, March 17, 2014.

Dick was born March 21, 1929 in Birchwood, WI to Roy and Mabel (Christensen) Dakins. Dick attended Wilson Center School through eighth grade, and then moved to Luck, WI to attend his four years of high school. Following graduation in 1947, Dick moved back to the farm in Birchwood to help his dad with farming and logging. In 1952, Dick took over the family farm after the tragic death of his father as the result of a logging accident. On October 5, 1952, Dick married Joycell Kadrlik at Jehovah Lutheran Church in St. Paul, MN.

Dick and Joycell enjoyed farming together side by side for many years and raising their four children. During the time they were farming, Dick simultaneously served on the Birchwood School Board, the Trinity Lutheran Church Council and as a clerk for the Town of Wilson. In 1970, Dick started working as a substitute mail carrier at the Birchwood Post Office. In 1973 he became a full-time rural mail carrier. He and Joycell sold the farm that same year to Dick's nephew and built a new house. Dick retired from the postal service in 1992. After retirement, Dick enjoyed working in the woods, cutting firewood, fishing, hunting, traveling, living in the country, seeing the beautiful sunsets, feeding humming birds and taking care of an oversized garden.

Dick and Joycell vacationed nearly every year of their 60 years together, including many trips to Canada fishing, four trips to Alaska via the Al-Can Highway, a trip up the Inside Passage, and trips to all corners of the U.S. and most of Canada. The Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks were his favorite locations and he visited them many times.

Dick Dakins is survived by 2 sons, David (Amelia) Dakins of Birchwood, WI and Doug (Toni) Dakins of Barron, WI; 2 daughters, Judy (Jim) St. Vincent of Madison, WI and Janet (John) Schieffer of Rice Lake, WI; 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends. Dick was preceded in death by the love of his life, Joycell in 2012; his parents, Roy and Mabel; his brothers, Donald and Eugene; and his sisters, Carol Anderson and Muriel Fillmore.
