Allan Goodwin Dahlgren, Jr., Palm Harbor, FL, beloved husband of the late Marie Elisabeth Dahlgren (nee Olsson) passed away on October 31, 2012 at the age of 88.

He was born on August 5th, 1924 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Allan G. Dahlgren, Sr. and Frances E. Dahlgren (nee Stein) and raised in the Squirrel Hill area. In 1934 he attended Kelly's Dancing School with his sister where Gene Kelly was one of his teachers.

During Allan's senior year at Taylor Allderdice H.S., Pearl Harbor was bombed. The following day, at the age of 17, Allan walked into the local Navy Recruiting station and joined the Navy. This was a move that didn't thrill his parents, but after arranging to graduate as scheduled with his class in January of 1942, they gave their permission and he headed off to "boot camp". While at the Naval Training Station in Newport, Rhode Island, he followed a pretty girl to a dance for enlisted service men. Standing at the top of the stairs was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, Marie. He quickly signed her dance card and just 4 weeks later as he was getting ready to ship out he proposed, and she said yes!

During WWII, Allan served on the USS Augusta which was the Flagship for the invasion of North Africa (Operation Torch) where he had the honor of meeting General Patton on three occasions. He also served on the YMS-159, a minesweeper in the Caribbean. In the spring of 1944 he was given orders to report to the Naval Academy's prep school, and with just a few weeks notice, a wedding was planned.

On May 21st, 1944, Allan and Marie became husband and wife at the historic Trinity Church in Newport, Rhode Island. It was a union that would span 68 years and produce 6 children, 18 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

After the war, he attended the University of Pittsburgh on the GI Bill where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in just 3 years. He began his career with Westinghouse Electric serving steel mills throughout the northeast, working his way up the corporate ladder until he was appointed plant manager at a facility in New Jersey. In the early 1970s the company eliminated his job and he accepted a position as Plant Engineer with Babcock and Wilcox Tubular Products Division in Beaver Falls. He was a registered Professional Engineer and a member of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers.

In 1988, after more than 40 years, Allan and Marie retired to New Smyrna Beach, Florida. He was active in numerous charities and organizations including SCORE, the Elk's Lodge, AARP, the Democratic Club, Habitat for Humanity, the Chamber of Commerce, and his Church. He has been a resident of Palm Harbor for 12 years and is a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church. He enjoyed dancing, boating, traveling, the circus, and spending time with his family and friends.

Allan is survived by 6 children: Richard Dahlgren, Bulger, PA; Lawrence (Jo Ellen) Dahlgren, South Daytona, FL; Susan Stevens (Greg Foster), Palm Harbor, FL; Kathryn (Blake) Angove, Clawson, MI; Jeffrey Dahlgren, Palm Harbor, FL; Nancy Dahlgren (Paul Kovitz), Portland, Oregon: 2 sisters, Ann Luckett, Clearwater, FL; Margaret Weissert, Mishawaka, IN; 18 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Dunedin FL, on Monday November 12, 2012, at 4:00 pm, by Pastor Alan Wolkenhauer. Interment will follow at a later date in Bay Pines National Cemetery. Memorials in his name may be made to the VFW or the charity of one's choice.
