Isabel Jean (Dahlgren) Brandt was born on September 9, 1931 in Roseau, MN to Ingeborg (Larson) and Nels Dahlgren.
She and Leland Brandt were married on January 11, 1949 and she began her married life on a farm in Salol. In 1960, the Brandt's moved into Roseau. Isabel worked in the Roseau school cafeteria under the leadership of her mother, Ingeborg Dahlgren.
In the spring of 1965, Leland and Isabel began their lengthy food service career by opening Brandt's Tastee Freeze which later turned to Brandt's Drive Inn, they operated this business through the summer of 1975. During the off- season from the drive-inn, Isabel clerked at the License Bureau, Bobby's Fashion and Mattson Pharmacy. In the winter of 1976, Isabel started cooking at the Travel Host Restaurant, then one year later, Leland and Isabel purchased this business which became Brandt's Restaurant until 2003. The Brandt's purchased the motel part of this business in 1983, and then moved into the Super 8, where they lived for 20 years. She will be most remembered for her hard work ethic, dependability and matter-of-fact personality.
The highlight to her days were when her children and grandchildren came to visit. The yearly Brandt-Girl Trips were memorable because of mom's "get up and go" sense of adventure. The girls enjoyed trips to Florida, Colorado, California, Arizona, New York, Sweden, Brazil and various Minnesota locations.
Life and travel began to slow down in 2001 when she was diagnosed with a type of palsy disease. As it progressed, she persevered with a positive attitude and determination to engage in whatever activities she could. Although she physically declined, she remained mentally sharp and alert.
In her final year in Roseau, living at Oak Crest Senior Housing and Sheltering Oaks, she enjoyed seeing familiar faces, playing Skip-Bo, Friday Bingo, attending Bible Study and church services. She was a devoted member of Roseau First Lutheran Church which was a very important part of her life. She passed away on Christmas morning surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her husband, Leland Brandt of Roseau; children, Anne Campbell of Eagan, MN, Paul (Brenda) Brandt of Roseau, Steven (Joann) Brandt of Savage, MN, Mary Bergland of Roseau, Carol (Kevin) Jacobson of Maplewood, MN and Nancy Brandt of Crystal, MN; grandchildren, Emily, Noelle, Nick, Jesse, Aaron, Morgan, Noah, Kirsten, Andrew, Jon Paul, and Brian; siblings, Thelma Hagen of Roseau, John (Ginny) Dahlgren of Lubbock, TX, Betty (Phil) Lansing of Mound, MN and Margaret (Joe) Warrick of Valley Springs, CA; and special Brazilian family, Rita Ferraz-Rivero, Dilvan, Isolete, and Larissa.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 29th at 1 PM at the First Lutheran Church in Roseau. Visitation will be on Friday from 6-8 PM with an 8:00 prayer service at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau.
Interment will be at the Bethel-Stafford Cemetery.
