Don farmed for many years, and in the mid-60's he went to work at Donavan's in New Brighton, MN Later he painted houses, set grave markers and did other jobs in the Rush City area until his retirement.

He was an avid reader of westerns, always read the St. Paul daily newspaper and loved doing crossword puzzles He and Evelyn enjoyed traveling and made several trips across the United States visiting family members, friends and old army buddies. He loved a good cup of coffee, taking his with cream and sugar, and was always ready to go out for coffee or dinner with friends.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Rush City, seeing all of his six children confirmed there. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans and from 1976 to 1989 served as Commander of the American Legion Post in Rush City. He was also a past member of the Rush City Lions Club.
