Dawn Barger passed away September 1, 2011 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. It was a welcome relief for this wonderful woman, mother and grandmother.
Dawn was born June 30, 1928 to Wayne and Lana (Zehr) Daggett in Kearney, NE. After high school and a year at Kearney State College she transferred to the University of Nebraska – Lincoln where she was active in the Tri-Delt sorority, rising to the office of president, as well as the school newspaper. Here she met her future husband, Robert C. "Buck" Barger, fresh back from serving his country in World War II. She graduated in 1951 with a degree in Speech Pathology.
After marrying, the two settled in Omaha where they had their first 3 children: William (Deborah) of Houston, TX, Shawn (Teri Gibbs) of Asheville, NC and Robert (Michelle) of Columbus, WI. After several more moves over the ensuing years, the Barger's found themselves back in Lincoln where they had their fourth child, Rebecca Anne (Keith Havenstein) now of southern California.
Dawn was a firm believer in the power of education and after working as a speech pathologist, took on the role of educator as a high school and junior college teacher. She loved teaching and continued doing it well into her 70's. She also loved traveling and after numerous forays to the Holy Land and Europe fell in love with Ireland where she vacationed annually for many years.
Dawn is survived by her 4 children, 6 grandchildren: Melissa Barger (Steve Diamond) of California, Allison Barger of Colorado, Zehr and Jennings Gibbs-Barger of North Carolina and Fiona and Claire Havenstein of California as well as her two brothers, Allen (Judy) Daggett of Georgia and Robert (Joanne) Daggett of Arizona and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dawn's spent her final years at The Countryhouse in Grand Island, NE where she received the utmost care and respect. The Barger family would like to thank all the staff @ Countryhouse for the extraordinary care afforded our mother as well as HospiceCare for the attention provided in her final days.
There will be a graveside service at Kearney Cemetery, 4400 Ave. I, Kearney, NE, on Saturday, September 10th @ 09:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation @ One Intrepid Square, West 46th Street and Twelfth Avenue, New York, NY 10036
