Born Mamie Beryl Cyphert, she was the 6th of 8 children born to A. A. Cyphert and Esther (Beer) Cyphert. A.A. and Esther moved from Pennsylvania to Wyoming where he drilled the first producing oil well in the state.
When Mamie was about 22 she married John Donnell (Don) Miller. They had only been married 5 or 6 years when Mamie's sister, Maude, died. Maude's husband was unable to care for the five children. A.A. was appointed guardian and the children went to live with Mamie and Don. Eventually, Mamie and Don adopted the youngest, Neva Norine.
In the 1920's, the Miller family (Don, Mamie and Norine) moved to Washington where Don was a salesman and Mamie taught school and, later, had a dressmaking studio. Don and Mamie divorced.
October 10, 1933, Mamie married Herman P. Behrens, a longshoreman. The couple lived in Tacoma. Mamie continued her business under the name Miller Dressmaking Studio. In 1987, Herman died.
In her final years, Mamie lived in a nursing home. She spent Christmas with family at her niece's home in 1987 and died 5 days later, on December 30th.
