Dorothy "Dode" Cuvelier, 85, of Shell Rock, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.

Dorothy Elizabeth Cuvelier was born on August 19, 1926, the daughter of Arthur and Mary Elizabeth (Ferguson) Allen in Panora, Iowa. She graduated from Glidden high school in Glidden, Iowa in 1943 and then attended Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines for three years. Following her education, Dorothy was a nurse in Galveston, Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, for Dr. Everson in Shell Rock, and the Guttenberg Hospital in Guttenberg. On June 6, 1953, she was united in marriage to Theodore "Ted" Dean Cuvelier at the United Methodist Church in Glidden. The couple made their home in rural Butler County and Dorothy went back to nursing at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. In 1981, the couple moved to an acreage in rural Aplington.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Shell Rock, Rebekahs, Eastern Star, Allison gardening club and the Dumont Red Hats. Dorothy enjoyed gardening, painting, Eucranian eggs, but most especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors are her two sons and two daughters, Ted (Vicky) Cuvelier of Binghamton, New York; Susan (Rick) Kromminga of Shell Rock; Diana Oltmann of Waverly and Tom (Karla) Cuvelier of Shell Rock; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brother, Robert Allen of Ames and by a sister, Ruth (Bob) Nichols of Newark, Delaware. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ted on November 16, 2008; sister, Kathryn Messerly and by a brother, Charles "Ed" Allen.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 20, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the United Methodist Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Dan Fernandez officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock. Friends may call from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm on Sunday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock and also an hour prior to the services on Monday at the church.
