Benjamin Elwood Cutrell, 76, of DeLand, Fla., formerly of Scottdale, passed away Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at his residence, following a lingering illness. He was born in Scottdale, the third son of the late George and Frances Nissley Cutrell. Ben is survived by his wife, Dorothy Stutzman Cutrell, with whom he celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Dec. 2, 1999; a daughter, Kathy Royer and her husband, Wayne, of Elkhart, Ind.; a son, David Cutrell of DeLand, Fla.; four grandchildren, Josh and Carrie Royer, Jennifer and Natasha Cutrell; three sisters, Helen Holdeman of Loveland, Colo., Janet Yost of Broomfield, Colo., and Ruth Neufeld of Loveland, Colo.; and two brothers, Sam Cutrell of Lakewood, Colo., and John Cutrell of Keedysville, Md. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Orie and George Richard Cutrell. Ben served as publisher of Mennonite Publishing House/Herald Press from 1961 until his retirement in 1988. He was the third publisher to head this Scottdale-based Mennonite Church organization, which began in 1908. During his tenure, the publishing effort grew from a $2 million to a $13 million business. Ben also shared his expertise in publishing with on-site consultations with the Lutheran Press, Papua New Guinea; the Lovedale Press, in a homeland of South Africa; and the Amity Press in Nanjing, China. Ben was a 1940 graduate of Scottdale High School. He studied at Eastern Mennonite School (now Eastern Mennonite University), Harrisonburg, Va., and graduated in 1944 from Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University), Pittsburgh, with a degree in printing management. Ben's family received friends in the Mennonite Church of Scottdale, 801 Market St., on Thursday in the West Fellowship Hall of the church. Memorial service was in the church Sanctuary with James E. Horsch officiating. Inurnment was in the Alverton Cemetery. Local funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 W. Pittsburgh St., Scottdale. The family suggests memorials be made to the Mennonite Publishing House of Scottdale or to the China Education Exchange. Checks may be made to the Mennonite Church of Scottdale or sent to the office at 801 Market St., Scottdale, PA 15683.
