Elizabeth Inez Cutler Cobb

Manson

Born August 12, 1916, in Cleveland, OH, the second child of Grace Allen and Glenn Cutler, passed away Monday, December 11, 2006. She had 3 brothers, Dr. John Cutler, a leader in Public Health Medicine, Captain Frank Cutler, an ace, shot down in WWII, and Harold Cutler, killed in a training accident in WWII. She attended schools in Cleveland, graduated from Collinwood High School and attended Fenn College.

She attended beauty school and worked as a beautician to help with the family finances during the depression. Elizabeth married John L. Cobb, October 1, 1937. Their 5 children were all born in Cleveland and lived on the Willoughby, OH farm until 1951, when they migrated to Manson. Theirs was the second family to build a home on Willow Point where they lived until 1958, when the family moved to Spokane. Elizabeth attended Whitworth College, graduating in 1963, and continued her education at Gonzaga Law School until she went into business. For several years, she owned and operated a beverage business in Shell Knob, MO then retired to Manson in 1994, to be closer to family.

Her last few years were spent at Heritage Heights and Regency Manor, where she received excellent care and made many friends. An avid reader, Liz was a lifetime learner. She thrived on political discussions, church history and travel. She was a superb gourmet cook and enjoyed puttering in her herb and flower gardens. When her fingers and eyesight still allowed, she enjoyed needlework and knitting. Many of the altar hangings at St. Andrews Church in Chelan were done by Liz in the 1950's.

In later years, even with a bad hip, she was thrilled to be able to travel to Scotland, Ireland, and Wales; to take two cruises to Alaska and spend two autumn seasons enjoying the colors of New England and the Southwest.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Elise Cutler of Pittsburg; her ex-husband, John Cobb (age 93); and her five children, Mary Closson and Hannah Hubbard (Elbert) of Manson; Sally Serafim (Leon) of Honolulu, HI; Frank Cobb (Jill) of Spokane; and Margaret Harrison (Brian) of Astoria, OR. She also leaves 11 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a niece and nephew, Anne Stager and Michael Hartley; numerous cousins and friends. Her parents; and 3 brothers preceded her in death.

Services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Chelan or to Habitat for Humanity. Services are under the direction of Precht Rose Chapel, Chelan.

daughter's obituary:

The Wenatchee World - Sep. 11, 2015
Mary Cobb Closson passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 5, 2015, at Lake Chelan Community Hospital, after a long, courageous struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born in Cleveland, OH on December 3, 1938, to John L. and Elizabeth Cutler Cobb, she was the oldest of five siblings. Early years were spent on the family’s Willoughby, OH farm where the children enjoyed countless hours roaming the nearby woods and fields, riding horseback with the neighbors, raising baby chicks, picking tomatoes off the vine, cherries and apples in the orchard, and exploring the attic full of antiques on rainy afternoons. Hot and muggy summers would find them at their family friend’s cabin near Lake Erie for swimming, barbecuing, and beauty contests. At one of these contests, Mary was proclaimed, “Miss Broken Bottles” and received a big collie dog statue as her prize, much to the envy of her sisters. In the summer of 1951, all seven of the Cobb family piled into their Hudson and made the ten day road trip to Manson, to live in a new home built on Willow Point. Mary attended Manson Jr. and Sr. High, graduating in 1957. Following graduation, she went to San Diego and attended business college. Invited to a Methodist young adult party by a girlfriend, she arrived on the back of a Vespa scooter, and there she met sailor, Wilbur Closson. Wilbur and Mary were married Nov. 27, 1960, and honeymooned in the back of a borrowed camper. This would be the first of many travel and camping adventures for the two of them and their family, which grew to include Helen, Wayne and Scott; all born in San Diego. Wilbur served 20 years in the Navy, mostly stationed out of San Diego, with the exception of two years in Seattle serving on the icebreaker, Burton Island. Mary was always very involved in family, music and church activities. She especially enjoyed serving as Cub Scout leader and trainer with her husband. They camped, they traveled, they sang in the church choir. In 1992, after he retired from his Civil Service position, Wilbur and Mary moved to Manson and built their dream home on Willow Point. Senior Meals, Scouting Kiwanis, Lake Chelan United Methodist Church, Habitat yard sales, LCC Hospital, Chelan Valley Players, Bach Festival and Columbia Chorale were some of the organizations that benefited from the generous volunteering spirit of Mary and Wilbur. And they still took time to attend his ship reunions, head off to Canada, travel by train in the Mexican Grand Canyon, and visit Virginia and Florida for their son, Scott’s navy graduation. After Wilbur’s passing in 2003, Mary traveled by herself to ship reunions on the east coast, and with her children and special friend, Evie Preston, to Holland, Hawaii and Alaska. Mary was a shy, quiet, loving and sensitive person, who admitted to being helped out of her shyness by outgoing Wilbur.
She will be greatly missed by her children: Helen of Manson, WA, Wayne of Chelan, WA, and Scott of Irvine, CA; and her four siblings: Hannah (Elbert) Hubbard of Manson, WA, Sally (Leon) Serafim of Santa Cruz, CA, Frank (Jill) Cobb of Spokane, WA, and Margaret Harrison of Astoria, OR; her brother-in-law, David Closson of El Cajon, CA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur, her parents, and her brother-in-law, Brian Harrison.
There will be a private burial at Fraternal Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lake Chelan United Methodist Church or to Lake Chelan Bach Fest (Cora Hartley Endowment Fund).
