JOANNA BEATRICE CURTIS
Joanna Beatrice Curtis was born on September 22, 1881, in Smithville, Graham County, Arizona to Moses Curtis and Elizabeth Hanks.
Her parents, Moses Curtis and Elizabeth Hanks, had to leave their homestead in Curtis because of an Indian raid and had crossed the flooded Gila River on a raft. The only accommodations that the family could find in Smithville was a shed that had been used to pen animals.
Joanna and her mother were in ill health after her birth and were cared for by the good people in Smithville. Joanna's mother, as well as the other Curtis settlers, were suffering from the affects of malaria at the time.
While still an infant, Joanna was to make the hurried move from Curtis to Smithville twice more before her parents and other settlers built the 'Curtis Stockade for Indian protection. Joanna spent her younger years in the stockade before the family moved to the Curtis Townsite in 1883.
She attended school in Curtis and lived in a two storied brick home. She was well known in Curtis for her humorous recitations and her sense of humor.
On September 12, 1899, she married David Orland Colvin. After their marriage, David and Joanna made thei home in Eden where their first four children were born. They then moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where their twins were born in 1919. After living in Phoenix for several years, the Colvin family moved to Los Angeles, where David Orlando died on June 20, 1951 and was buried in Whittier Cemetery, California.
Joanna lived alone for twelve years until her death in Montebello, California, on November 1, 1963. She was buried next to her husband in the Whittier Cemetery.
David and Joanna were the parents of six children: Reuben Orlando (1. Anna Winkleman) 2. Pearl), Delila Elizabeth (1. John Taylor 2. John Paul Phelps), Cloral Beatrice (died youn), Opal Isabell (died young), Lola - twin (Frank Severio Pipis) and Lark - twin (Stella Lee Chapman).
