Benjamin was born in New York. His Civil War military and pension records have conflicting birth localities of Genesee Co. and Ontario County, New York.
He married Sarah Lavantia CARD in Park, St. Joseph, Michigan on 24 May 1851. He enlisted as a volunteer with the Michigan Cavalry, Company B on 14 Aug 1862 and served for three years.
Benjamin and Sarah had ten children: Cyrus Jerome 1852-1932, Friend Charles 1853-1921, Sarah Ellenor 1856-1933, Oscar Benjamin 1858-1921, Cora Belle 1861-1932, George Leslie 1863-1931, William Rushmer 1866-1938, John J. 1868-1873, Mary Lavantia 1871-1958, DeWilton Emory 1873-1952.
The family migrated to Logan, Utah in the 1880s, then they settled in Preston, Idaho. Some of the family eventually moved to Big Timber, Sweet Grass, Montana and varioius locations in California. Today descendants are scattered throughout the United States.
