Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". He was the older brother of Brevet Brigadier General James F. Curtis of the 4th California Infantry.
