Karen E Curtis, 49, of Silverthorn, Colorado, formerly of Kelly, died Wednesday, Septembr 4, 1996, at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver. She was diagnosed with melanoma in September, 1995.
Karen was born June 14, 1947, on a farm NE of Kelly, the daughter of Albert and Lucille Kramer Wessel. She grew up there and graduated from St. Bede's school in Kelly in 1965. She attended a school operated by IBM. She worked as a secretary at Phillips Oil Company in Kansas City, KS for three years.
On November 14, 1967, she married Raymond Curtis at Kansas City, KS. Raymond was in the U.S. Army. In the fall of 1968, they moved to Louisville, Kentucky where Raymond was stationed at Ft. Knox. They also lived in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Tucson, Arizona.
In 1980, they moved to Seneca. In 1985, they moved to Hiawatha. Karen worked at the Dairy Queen in Hiawatha. In 1993, they moved to Dillon, Colorado. She began employment as an assistant manager at Wendy's. She was unable to work after her cancer was diagnosed.
She was a member of Our Lady of Peace Church in Dillon. She was a former member of St. Bede's Church in Kelly, and St. Ann's Church in Hiawatha, where she was a lay minister.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Curtis, Silverthorn, CO; two sons, Jon Curtis, Wamego; and Erik Curtis, Topeka; daughter, Erika Turner, Wamego; her parents, Albert and Lucille Wessel, Seneca; brother, Frank Wessel, Axtell; three sisters, Rose Wilhelm, Seneca; Alice Hards, Oneida; Rita Pfannenstiel, Silver Lake; and three grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Bede's Church, Kelly. Burial was in the church cemetery.
