Mr. Curtis was a Colonel in the Confederate Army, he was captured and paroled with the understanding he would not raise a gun against the United States government. In 1873 he married Miss Mattie Trent in Missouri. He suffered from Bright's disease which was the cause of death. He is survived by his wife, Mattie, two sons George D, and John Jr. and a small daughter Ione.


Curtis was an attorney and prominent Butte business man. He was the head of the real estate firms of Curtis & Majors and John H. Curtis & Co. He was a member of the directorate of the State Savings Bank, a member of the Robert Emmet Literary Association, a trustee of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Montana Pioneers' association and a member of the Silver Bow Bar Association. He was also instrumental in constructing Curtis Music Hall (1892). He purchased the lots for St. James Hospital and encouraged construction of Butte's first Catholic Church. (Richard Gibson, Montana Standard, February 28, 1016)
