Adrian Roderick Curry, a retired civilian employee of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who was recognized for his poetry, died Monday in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Curry, 83, served in the Corps of Engineers for 34 years, retiring as chief of the Position Management and Classification Branch of the Mobile District's Personnel Division. He was honored by the Mobile Bay Area Writer's Guild for his book "The Fairies", a collection of 68 poems that was published in 1952. A native of Toinette, AL in Washington County, Curry lived in Mobile for the past 73 years. He earned money to attend business college by working in a sawmill as a lumber tallier. He was a merchant seaman, served in the U.S. Coast Guard and served in the Navy Reserves during the Korean War. A member of Spring Hill Avenue United Methodist Church, he sang in the adult choir for many years and taught Sunday School. Curry is survived by his wife, Clara E. "Claire" Duffie Curry of Mobile; a son, the Rev. Adrian R. "Rod" Curry, Jr. of Thomasville, AL; two daughters, Alva Lois Kaufman of Oxnard, CA and Linda Carol Miller of Gulfport, MS; two brothers, Edmund Vick Curry of Pascagoula, MS and Edward King Curry of Mobile, seven grandchildren and other relatives. Visitation will the Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery. The family requests memorials be made to Spring Hill Avenue United Methodist Church.
