Death: Sep. 19, 1949

Author and journalist. Born William Jacob Cuppy in Auburn, Indiana, he was known for his satirical magazine articles and books about nature and historical figures. Among his books are: "How to Be a Hermit" (1929); "How to Tell Your Friends from the Apes" (1931); "How to Become Extinct" (1941); "How to Attract the Wombat" (1949); and "The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody" (1950), the last two appearing posthumously. From 1926 until his death, he wrote a weekly "Mystery and Adventure" book review column for the New York Herald-Tribune, reviewing a career total of more than 4000 titles. He died at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York's Greenwich Village. His cremated remains were returned to Auburn and buried in a wooden urn in the grave next to that of his mother, Frances Stahl Cuppy (1855-1927), in the northeast quarter of Evergreen Cemetery. The grave was unmarked until 1985, when local donors erected a granite headstone with the inscription, "American Humorist."  (bio by: Michael Walter)
