Buford was born in Neptune, Tennessee, to the late Marshall and Emma Cunningham, and grew up in Southside, Tennessee. He received his primary education in Southside before joining the U.S. Army in 1946.

During the Berlin Airlift in 1947, Buford met Anna Zuhr whom he later married. They spent many days fishing, rock hunting, sightseeing, and just being together. Buford loved fishing and gardening. Buford was a very special man. He always put his family and others first. He never thought about himself.

Spending 26 years in the U.S. Army he dedicated his life to his family and country. His service career included the end of World War II, Korea, and two tours of Vietnam. His honors (of which he humbly guarded) included: World War II Victory Medal, World War II German Occupation Berlin Airlift, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Clasp 2 Loops, Meritorious Achievement The Republic of Viet Nam, "Heroism" The Army Commendation Medal Republic of Viet Nam, The Bronze Star Medal Republic of Vietnam, The Army Commendation Medal First Oak Leaf Cluster, The Bronze Star Medal First Oak Leaf Cluster, The Army Commendation Medal 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster.

The numerous lists of Buford's other achievements and medals from his dedication to serve his county were impeccable. He retired an E-8. Our nation's candles will flicker a little dimmer as we lose another member of our country's greatest generation.

A longtime resident of Eddy, Texas, Buford spent the last two and a half years in the warm sunny Rio Grande Valley living with his daughter, Anita Baker and her husband, Joe Baker, after his beloved wife, Anna, passed away in 2012. He spent his days enjoying what he loved best, fishing, gardening, and going to the flea market.
