SAN ANGELO Dr. Don Cunningham went to be with the Lord on the evening of Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005. Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Donald Ross Cunningham was born in Douglas, Wyo., on Oct. 10, 1918, to Charles and Gladys Lord Cunningham. The family moved to San Angelo when he was 9. He graduated from San Angelo Lake View High School as salutatorian in 1936. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated from the School of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn. There he met and married his wife, Dell Earnheart. He opened his own office at 18 W. Beauregard, where he practiced for 53 of his 55 years as an optometrist. In his lifetime he had a deep appreciation for music; was an avid bowler; longtime member of Rotary and Lions Club; founding member of Businessmen's Bible Class; a lifetime member, as well as a member of the board of directors, of the Salvation Army; was an original member of "The 31" which publishes daily devotionals in the San Angelo Standard-Times; was one of the founders of Angelo Bible Church; and served as a city council member of San Angelo. Don was a highly respected and loved member of the community. He and Dell were married 42 years. They had three daughters. She preceded him in death in 1989. In August 2001, he married Doris Potter of San Angelo. Survivors include his wife of the home, Doris; his three daughters, Elaine Quinn and husband John of Brady,MARTHA FEATHERSTON and husband CALVIN FEATHERSTON , and Donna Anderson and husband Mike, all of San Angelo; two brothers, CHARLES L. CUNNINGHAM and wife VERA CUNNINGHAM of San Angelo, and DR. NORMAN CUNNINGHAM of Menard; five grandchildren, Jamie Haynes and husband J.T. of Amarillo, David Quinn of College Station, Callie Yeager and husband Will of Kilgore, Jeff Featherston of Austin and Jared Krammer of San Angelo. His extended family includes Gene and Dennis Potter, Sandra, Angel and Cynthia Hyatt and numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Jeff Featherston, David Quinn, Jared Krammer, Will Yeager, Gene Potter and Dennis Potter. The family wishes to extend special thanks to his caregivers at home and at Meadowcreek Nursing Home, his attending physicians and nursing staff and to Hospice of San Angelo. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in his honor to the Salvation Army or Hospice of San Angelo.
