A.G. Cummings Dies at 82; School Head Here 21 Years

Adison Gilmore Cummings, who was superintendent of Bedford County public schools for 21 years, died Thursday, September 16, in Bedford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 82. He was the husband of Mrs. Cora Wilkins Cummings, who survives.

Mr. Cummings headed the county's public school system from 1932 until 1953, a period of great changes. The elementary school system was consolidated, new high schools built and a good start made on the high school consolidation program which resulted in the building of Liberty and Staunton River High Schools.

He was born in Rockbridge County, son of William H. Cummings and Mrs. Martha Siles Cummings. He was educated at Washington and Lee University, the University of Virginia and at the University of Beaune in Cote d'Or prefecture in France.

In World War One he served in Army Intelligence and was a past commander of the Bedford post of the American Legion. In 1944 the U.S. Treasury Department appointed him chairman of the Bedford War Finance Committee, a post he held until his death. In that position he headed several war fund campaigns. He was a member of the Bedford Rotary Club, and for many years took an active part in the civic and cultural life of the community.

Mr. Cummings was a member of Bedford Presbyterian Church and for several years an elder of the church.

After his long tenure as the superintendent, Mr. Cummings retired, informing the County School Board in 1953 he did not wish to be reelected superintendent. Later for twelve years he represented the Denoyer-Geppert Company of Chicago in this area.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, a niece and a nephew.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Sept. 18, in Bedford Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. J. Walter Mann. Burial was in the cemetery of Hungars Episcopalian Church at Bridgetown on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
