Mrs. Benton was born in Brunswick County on February 12, 1911, and was the daughter of the late Albert A. and Nettie McDowell Cumbee. She was preceded in death by her husband. Marcellar Benton. Mrs. Benton was a member of the Town Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are four sons, Reverend Martin L. Benton of Delco, NC, Conrad C. Benton of Winnabow, NC, Michael D. Benton of Wilmington, NC, and Reverend Kenneth D. Benton of Zebulon, NC; five daughters, Nettie Jane Taylor of Pink Hill, NC, Marjorie Wolfe of Winnabow, NC, Phoebe Clemmons of Supply, NC, Cheryl Hollis of Hampstead, NC, and Kathryn B. Weddle of Wilmington, NC; two half-brothers, Burnice Cumbee of Long Beach, NC, and Delmas Cumbee of Williamston, NC; two half-sisters, Julia Knox of Bolivia, NC, and Ethel Cumbee of Bolivia, NC; twenty-two grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 5, 1996, in Town Creek Baptist Church with the Reverend Vic Potter and the Reverend David Woodly officiating. Interment will follow in the New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening, January 4, 1996, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service, Oleander Chapel, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
