Berl Culver was born Berl Josephine Sheldon on April 8, 1911 in the Sheldon home in Mazeppa township, Mazeppa, Wabasha Co., Minnesota. She had dark brown hair and green eyes. She lived with her parents, Arlington Gilmore Sheldon and Nancy Mae Cox Sheldon for the first eighteen years of her life. She had five sisters and three brothers, she being the second born. At the age, of eighteen she went to work for the Daniel Slaymaker Culver family living near Oronoco, Minnesota. They had a 31 year old son who was single and still living at home. In a short time they were married and continued to live in the Culver home with Lecil's parents, Daniel Slaymaker and Rose Lea Miller Culver. About 15 months later their oldest child, Walter Roy, arrived on August 16, 1931. Then about every four years another child arrived .... In 1955 mom became pregnant with twins. At about three months she miscarried the first one and at about five months she miscarried the second one, whom she named David. This miscarriage sent her into a depression which went on for some time. She talked about David a lot in the years to follow. When Mom and Dad had been married almost 37 years dad was suddenly taken from us with a stroke. Soon after Mom decided to leave the farm, went to Minneapolis and spent most of the next ten years doing Home Health care for different individuals. She loved her job and enjoyed meeting people and being involved in things she couldn't be on the farm. When we were young we went to several different churches. Then when I was about 12 years old, mom joined the Megiddo Mission faith which her father had been a member of. She was involved with them until the last few years of her life when she became involved in the Bahai faith. Mom always enjoyed her children and her grandchildren. She always said the more the merrier.
