Herman Crump VALDESE Herman Allen Crump, 85, of Connelly Springs, departed his life and went to his heavenly home on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, after a brief illness. Mr. Crump was born Feb. 17, 1926, in Stanly County, a son of the late Grover Cleveland Crump and Elmina Morton Crump. He was a faithful and active member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher for many years, teaching the Billy Evans Sunday School Class. Herman was a retired veteran who served his country in the United States Army and the United States Air Force, where he was nationally recognized as a superior marksman and volunteered in an orphanage while in Seoul, Korea. H. Crump served the Valdese Community as a co-owner and operator of the Sav-A-Center for almost 30 years. In retirement, he continued working part-time at Ray Childers Elementary and Knob Mulch. He was a member of the Lovelady Masonic Lodge #670, in Valdese, for over 50 years, the Valdese Rotary Club, serving as a Paul Harris fellow, was on the board of directors with the Burke County AA, was a member of the Shriners, a member of American Legion, and a volunteer with Blue Ridge Health-Care. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Wilson Crump, in 2009; and three brothers, David, Lloyd, and Grover Crump. Surviving are his daughter, Susan Poll-peter and husband, David, of Morganton; a son Michael Crump of Connelly Springs, and a grandson, Cole Wilson and wife, Lauren, of Charlotte; sisters, Lois Howe of California, Alice Rose Jones and husband, Dick, of Concord, and Bernice Sides and husband, Don, of Albe-marle; two brothers, Chase Crump and wife, Nancy, of Charlotte and Cicero Crump and wife, Penny, of High Point; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends Janice and Alan Jacks, Anna and Alyssa Jacks, Becky and Bob Roach, Joyce Nash, Alice Powell, and Eleanor Gibbs. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, with Revs. Michael Skinner and Darrell Webb officiating. A private interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park with full military honors by the United States Airforce, and Masonic Rites by the Lovelady Masonic Lodge #670. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church.
