Frances Ella Crumley passes away peacefully at the age of 91. When she was very young, she and her parents move to Nevada. They had lived in various mining towns, which include Seven Troughs, Betty O'Neill, Midas and Rochester. They settled in Lovelock, where she graduated from Pershing County High School. She graduated from the University of Nevada with a degree in journalism. This took her to Elko, where she became a reporter for the Elko Independent. It was in Elko that she met her future husband, Newton Hunt Crumley. They were married in Reno in 1937. During there years in Elko, she supported Newton in his businesses, as well as during his tour of duty in World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps. While in Elko, she won national championship honors in trap shooting. Frances was the first female to serve on the Boards of Directors for Harrah's and Sierra Pacific Power Company. She was also active in many other community organizations. In 1975, she received the Distinguished Nevadan Award from the University of Nevada. She was one of the first honorees in the Nevada Women's Fund Hall of Fame. She has continued to support the annual Sigma Nu Crumley Dinner, which was founded by Newton's parents 76 years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Taylor Smith; and sister, Carmen Freemont. She is survived by her children, Janice C. Pine Wilson (Thomas), Linda C. Veautin, Peggy C. Drake, Barbara C. Ricciardi (Tony) and Newton Hunt Crumley Jr (Michelle); 10 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren
