Surrounded by her family and caregivers, Florence E. Crumbaker, age 99, passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013.
Florence was born Nov. 21, 1913, in Missoula, Mont., to Frank and Ollie Borek. She was raised alongside her siblings in Columbus, Mont., graduating from Columbus High School in 1930. At age 16, Florence enrolled at Eastern Montana Normal School (now Montana State University Billings), ultimately earning her teaching certificate from the institution in 1932. After college graduation, she taught for three years in a one-room schoolhouse in Stillwater County.
On June 8, 1935, Florence married Jack E Crumbaker. They shared 67 years of marriage before Jack's passing in 2002. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Carol.
Florence was the consummate homemaker. She took great pride and joy in caring for her family. She was a fantastic cook, creative seamstress, had a wonderful sense of humor, and could carry on a conversation with anyone.
She was the perfect blend of tough country-girl and polished lady. Although often remembered for her stylish wardrobe and never having a hair out of place, Florence loved the outdoors. She and Jack built a cabin outside of Silver Gate, Mont., in the 1960s where they enjoyed three decades of fishing, snowmobiling, hiking and picnicking with friends and family. She could give any fly fisherman a run for his money. Throughout her years, Florence made many friends through the various Billings-area clubs and organizations to which she belonged, including: PEO, bridge club, the Elks club and the Highlands Golf Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Crumbaker; granddaughters Shelby (Michael) Gilluly and Sydne (Jeff) DeBusk, all of Billings; grandson, Jeff Nelson, Seattle, Wash.; great-grandchildren Laine Gilluly, Jack Gilluly, Molly DeBusk, and Sadie DeBusk and Jade Nelson; nephews Dale (Evelyn) Williams of Columbus and Bob Crumbacher of Billings; and nieces Bernice (Buzz) Christiansen of Billings and Darlene Sullivan of Bozeman.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Crumbaker; parents, Frank and Ollie Borek; brother Aubrey Borek and sister Frances Williams.
Florence spent the last four years living at Langemo Cottage, part of the St John's campus. She genuinely adored the staff at Langemo. We are so thankful for the loving care she received. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Ministries Foundation: Employee Assistance Program, 3940 Rimrock Rd, Billings, MT 59102.
Viewing is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 10, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 11, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary, 1001
