RETIRED CITY MERCHANT DIES, Stroke Is Fatal To Haskell Crumb, 86, Ex-Lumber Dealer
Haskell A. Crumb, 86, 1012 North Court street, pioneer Rockford lumber dealer and resident of this city for the past 56 years, died at 4:30 p.m. yesterday at his home. Death was caused by a stroke suffered Monday night.
Mr. Crumb was born September 7, 1855, in Leonardsville, New York and would have observed his 87th birthday anniversary Mondday. He came to Rockford from Chicago in 1886 and was associated with his father, the late R. W. Crumb, and his brother, Ward C. Crumb, in the lumber business at 7th street and Railroad avenue, present site of the Chicago and Northwestern railroad freight depot, for many years. Operation of the firm, known as R. W. Crumb and Sons, was taken over by Haskel and Ward Crumb following the death of their father. The company furnished lumber for a number of factories and buildings in the southeast and industrial area until it was sold about 30 years ago, when Haskell Crumb retired. He was a member of Second Congregational church, and at one time served as a deacon of the church.
Surviving are a son, Arthur R. Crumb, with whom he made his home; a daughter, Frances C. Crumb of Newfane, Vermont; and a brother, Ward Crumb, who now resides in Ames, Iowa. A second son, Stewart Haskell Crumb, died in 1924. Mr. Crumb's wife, Mary M. Crumb, preceded him in death death September 21, 1941. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Burpee-Wood funeral home and burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
