Austinville Woman Is Fatally Hurt In Car Wreck

Funeral rites for Mrs. Lillie Cox, who was fatally injured early Saturday morning 6 miles west of Summerville, Tennessee, in an automobile accident in which her son, Grady Cox, his wife, their two children and Miss Frances Messer, all of Austinville, were also hurt, were conducted at 1:30 this afternoon at the home in Austinville by Rev. S. R. Carpenter, Rev. Bud Bynum, Rev. and Mrs. T. C. Patton. Burial at Johnson Chapel was directed by Drinkard-Howell.

Mrs. Cox received head and chest injuries and died early Sunday morning at her home in Austinville, after being returned there in a Drinkard-Howell ambulance. She and the other injured were first treated at a clinic in Summerville before the transfer here.

Mrs. Cox and her son were brought to Decatur in a Drinkard-Howell ambulance, while private cars returned the other injured. They were all taken to the homes in Austinville.

The party from Austinville was on the way to Mississippi to visit when the accident happened. Members of the ambulance crew said Grady Cox told them his car was sideswiped by another that partly turned over against an embankment, was righted and continued in its way. The Austinville car turned over four times and was demolished. Grady Cox said there were apparently four people in the hit-run car. The accident happened just before daylight on Highway 64, ten miles east of Memphis.

Mrs. Cox is survived by three sons, Grady; R. E. and Hollis; a daughter, Mrs. Addie Messer; nine grandchildren, four brothers, three sisters.

Pallbearers were Will Royer, S. H. Bradley, P. O. Phillips, G. G. Cornelius, J. A. Daniel and Mr. Arthur. Those in charge of flowers for Mrs. Carrie Arthur, Mrs. Mattie Easton, Mrs. Dovie Woodall, Miss Cora Morris, Mrs. G. G. Cornelius, Mrs. P. O. Phillips, Mrs. J. P. McAnear, Miss Ruth Rorex, Mrs. Neil Hancock, Miss Eloise Gilbert, Mrs. A. J. Stroup and Miss Eloise Sparkman.

Mrs. Cox was well known here and her death was a great shock to a wide circle of friends.
