Mildred was born in rural Marshall County, Alabama, the daughter of James Henry Couch and Pearl G. (Henry) Couch. She married Glenis V. Crow on August 4, 1940. During World War II, she worked at US Army Camp Sibert, in Attalla, Alabama, using her small hands to clean out the insides of tips for large caliber ammunition and missiles. After the war, she worked for many years as a waitress, and raised two children, Sonny and Sandra. She eventually bought the restaurant she was working at from the owner, renaming it Mildred's Restaurant and moving it to downtown Attalla, just a block from Highway 11, the major route from Birmingham to Chattanooga in the days before the Interstate Highway System. The restaurant played host to many city functions, and many visitors, including televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, who played the piano in the restaraunt; gospel group The Sego Brothers and Naomi; and future US Presidents Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon. She suffered from asthma most of her life, and arthritis most of her adult life. She retired from the restaurant business in 1980, after having two hip replacement surgeries. She developed more lung problems later in life, suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema along with ashtma. Early one morning in May 1999, she was awoken by the doorbell and stumbled. She fell, landing on her shoulder and breaking her collarbone. She was admitted to Riverview Regional Medical Center in Gadsden, Alabama, where she had to undergo emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction. She was put on a respirator during surgery, and transferred to Vencor Rehabilitation Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee for treatment to wean her from the ventilator. She was eventually able to breathe on her own for almost a day, but her lungs had been weakened too much by her years of breathing troubles and the months on the ventilator. She died in her sleep on August 18, 1999. Her funeral was held at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Attalla, and she was buried in Rainbow Memorial Park, between her husband and son.
