Mrs. Merle G. Acord, 52, wife of Hallard E. Acord, 1705 Miland, East Alton, died at 8:20 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Hospital, following a short illness.
Before moving to East Alton, she had resided on Fullerton Avenue for 23 years and was employed at Alton High School as pastry department chef for 12 years.
Born in Flora, Ill., May 14, 1916, she was a daughter of Mrs. Bessie Cross of Wood River and the late Allen Cross. She was married July 23, 1932, in Alton.
Mrs. Acord was a past noble grand of the Thompson Rebecca Lodge 899.
In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jeanette Garber of Alton and Geraldine Dunnagan of Godfrey; a son, James, stationed with the U.S. Army, Ft. Lewis, Wash.; five grandchildren; a brother, Eugene Cross of Bethalto; and four sisters, Mrs. Beulah Miller of Eldorado; Mrs. Maxine Coatney of Fontana, Calif., Mrs. Mary Anderson of Mt. Vernon, Wash. and Mrs. Wanda Giedinghagen of Cottage Hills. She was preceded in death by a brother Leland.
Visitation will begin after 6 p.m. Saturday at Smith Funeral Home, Alton.
The Rev. Howard (Todd) Taylor of the First Baptist Church will officiate at funeral services at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Upper Alton cemetery.
