BURLINGTON - Irene Charlotte Cross, 92, passed away on Aug. 4, 2012, in the comfort of her care in Starr Farm Nursing Center, following a period of declining health, with her daughter by her side.
Born on June 20, 1920, in Georgia, Vt., Irene was the daughter of the late George and Grace (Boomhower) Conger.
Irene graduated from Bellows Free Academy and married Arthur F. Bell Sr., whom she survived, and married Joseph Cross, whom she also survived.
Irene and Joe Cross owned and operated the North Avenue Market for many years, until Joe retired.
Following his death, Irene worked from 1970 to 2005 at what was then Hill's Hardware Store in the Ethan Allen Shopping Center. Irene enjoyed her work as the cashier who knew where everything was in the very crowded hardware store, and shared a special relationship with every customer. Upon her retirement in December 2005, at age 85, The Burlington Free Press featured a story on her helpfulness and popularity with the customers, and identified Irene as the "Queen of Hill's Hardware."
Irene is survived by her sister, Doris Lemnah of Port Charlotte, Fla.; daughter, Cheryl Bell of Burlington; son, Arthur F. Bell Jr. and wife, Carole, of Ellicott City, Md.; granddaughter, Karen Russell and husband, Steve; great-grandchildren, Samuel and Haley Russell; as well as an extended stepfamily.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours at the Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Home at 85 North Winooski Ave., Burlington, on Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday morning, Aug. 7, 2012, at 10 a.m., followed by interment at the Hope Cemetery in Georgia, Vt.
