ST. ALBANS -- Gerald Houghton "Gerry" Cross, 85, passed away late Thursday night, April 17, 2003. He was born in Highgate Center Jan. 12, 1918, the son of the late N. Judson and Lula (Bragg) Cross. In 1949 he married Evelyn Doe who survives him.

Gerry was a graduate of Highgate High School in 1934, attended the University of Vermont Engineering College and graduated from the Parks College Division of St. Louis University with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corp. in Burbank, Calif. for several years then spent a year in the U. S. Navy before returning to Vermont where he was employed for 25 years by the Fonda Division of Standard Packaging Corp. as Chief Engineer and Development Manager. Following this, he operated his own business, Cross Engineering, designing and manufacturing specialized forming tooling, brokering sales of used paper and plastic machinery and consulting for U.S. and international manufacturers, retiring in 1991.

He was a former member of St. Albans Rotary Club and a Past President of the Sports Car Club of Vermont, in which he was very active for many years. He had also been a Scoutmaster in Highgate years ago. Skiing was his major hobby in the 1940's and he skied most of the major ski areas at that time, in Vermont and in the far west. Sports cars from the 1950's and up were always of major interest and he owned and drove many different brands. One of his most satisfying hobbies was the complete restoration, with his wife, Evelyn, of several historical homes in the St. Albans and Swanton area, living in each for several years.

In addition to his wife of 54 years, Evelyn, he is survived by two sons, Peter and his wife Pamela and their son, Patrick, of St. Albans, and J. Shane and his wife Michelle of Michigan; a brother, Philip J. Cross and his wife Kim of Littleton, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Wayne Cross in 1999.

A funeral service will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel. The Reverend Judy Kennedy will officiate. Entombment will follow in the family mausoleum in Highgate Center Cemetery. There will be no public visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the "Make A Wish Foundation of Vermont", 100 Dorset Street, South Burlington, Vt. 05403, or Swanton Historical Society, c/o Ron Kilburn, 11 Lake St., Swanton, Vt. 05488.
