Virginia Crosier Core, 101, of Huntington, passed away Monday, April 21, 2008, at Woodlands Retirement Community Health Care. Funeral service will be Thursday, April 24, by the Rev. Carol McKay at Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Woodmere Memorial Park. Virginia was born March 11, 1907, in Keenan, a daughter of the late Cyrus Peck and Minnie Zella Hoover Crosier. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, Associate Professor Eric V. Core; and her brothers and sisters, Virgil Lewis Crosier, Zula Jane Crosier, William Andrew Crosier, Charles Merston Crosier, Clinton Roscoe Crosier, Glenna Madge Crosier Potee, C.P. Crosier Jr. and Minnie Bell Fitzsimmons. Virginia was a very accomplished lady. She was well known in education circles. She started her education in a one-room school and graduated from Greenbrier School in Ronceverte. Later, she earned her A.B. degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon and a Master's degree from Marshall University. She taught 37 years in Monroe, Greenbrier, and Cabell counties. For a brief period she worked at the Federal Prison for Women in Alderson. In 1938-39, Virginia was appointed by the governor to represent West Virginia as hostess at the World's Fair in New York City. In 1960, again appointed by the governor, she served as delegate to the "Little White House Conference on Children and Youth" held in Washington, D.C. Virginia was selected Volunteer of the Year by the Huntington City Mission in 2001, and after 31 years of volunteer service at Cabell Huntington Hospital, in 2002 she was named Volunteer of the Year by the West Virginia Hospital Auxiliary. As a registered parliamentarian, Virginia was well known as a member of the Rotary Ann's the Beverly Hills Woman's Club, Marshall University Faculty Wives, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Pie, Cabell County Education Association, National Education Association and was an active member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church. A dedicated Christian, she served in the Women's Society of Christian Service and the Dorcas Circle. She always gave her all to the young people in education and in religious activities.
