SHELBURNE -- Clara Barnard, 99, a long time resident of Shelburne, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008 at the Julie Blair Nursing Home in Albany, NY.
She was born December 15, 1908 in West Halifax, VT, a daughter of Perley and Lilla (DeWolf) Crosier.
She graduated from Brattleboro (VT) High School and from Mount Holyoke College in 1930. In 1936 she married Francis E. Barnard of Shelburne, who died in 1988.
Mrs. Barnard was a mathematics teacher and audiovisual aide at Northfield School for Girls, one of the schools that formed Northfield Mount Hermon, and after her retirement, was a part-time guide at Historic Deerfield.
She was a communicant of St. James' Episcopal Church in Greenfield and a long time member of the Shelburne Grange, the Shelburne Historical Society, the American Association of University Women, Mount Holyoke alumnae groups, and advocacy groups for children and community betterment. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and the natural world, particularly birds and wildlife.
Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Sylvia Barnard of Albany, and her Granddaughter, Siobhan Reagan of New York City.
There will be a memorial service at St. James' Church in Greenfield at a time to be announced.
It is suggested donations be made to either the Shelburne Grange, Marion Taylor, Sec., 439 S. Shelburne Road, Shelburne, MA 01370 or to the Shelburne Free Library, in care of Launie York, 233 Shelburne Center Road, Shelburne, MA 01370.
