Woman Jumps Off Gate Span
SAN FRANCISCO (AP)-A well-dressed woman climbed over the rail of [the] Golden Gate bridge early today and plunged into the bay, more than 240 feet below.
A passing motorist, …, said he noticed a car stopped on the bridge, then saw the woman clinging to the outside of the bridge rail. He ran to her but she dropped from sight before he could reach her.
The car was traced through its registration to James S Bancroft of 2033 Oakland avenue, Piedmont. He said his wife, Mrs. Virginia Crosby Bancroft, 49, was missing. She had been ill recently.
Her father was Dr. Daniel Crosby, former president of the Alameda County Medical association, who died in 1944.
There were no notes in the automobile.
From other news reports, she leaped just after midnight. Her body was recovered on the 26th near the north tower of the bridge by a Coast Guard boat.
