BESSEMER CITY — George Albert Crosby, 77, of 108 W. Washington Ave., Bessemer City, died March 21, 2005, after an extended illness.
He was the son of Allen Crosby and Mamie Byars Crosby.
George was a member of First Baptist Church, Bessemer City, where a celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, March 24th, at 2:00 p.m.
He served his church as a longtime member of the choir, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Brotherhood President, and Chairman of the Music Committee.
Mr. Crosby was a past district Governor from the Bessemer City Lions Club in 1985-1986. He served in all the offices of his local club levels. George was the recipient of many awards including Lion Of The Year, John L. Stickley award, and the C. Coleman Cates award. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow and most recently was awarded the International President's Certificate of Appreciation for 42 years of distinguished Leadership and Service. He was a life member of the Association Care Chairman, Zone Chairman, Camp Dogwood Promotion, Diabetes-Glaucoma Detection, Eye and Human Tissue Bank, Statewide Boy's and Girl's Home Chairman, White Cane Chairman, NCLF Board and NCLF Executive Board, By Laws Committee, Statewide Chairman of Research and Long Range Planning.
George attended Bessemer City High School, Evans Business College, Textile and Insurance Schools, he taught LUTC at Gaston College.
He retired from Southern Life Insurance Co. and served 7 years as Executive Director of the Bessemer City area Chamber of Commerce.
During World War II, he served in the 13th Air Force with duty in the Pacific Theater.
Survivors: His wife of 53 years, the former Ruby Self, one daughter, Deborah Crosby Blake, two Grandchildren, Wendy Elizabeth and George Douglas Blake and one great grandchild, Sara Jane Soto, three brothers, Charles, Howard and William and two sisters, Maxine Forester and Elizabeth Heffner.
Entombment: Westview Gardens Mausoleum, with Military Rites.
