~*~ To remember Virginia ~*~
Virginia Maxine Croghan was born on August 23, 1935 in Sheldon, Iowa, the third of nine children born to Leroy O. Croghan and Annie Mildred Wesselink Croghan.
The family moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa when she was five. Virginia attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs.
She worked a variety of jobs as a young woman and met George Walker, a retired Navy Chief, while waitressing at Jerry Hill's Café. The two were married on December 16, 1959 in Omaha, Nebraska. They moved several times, and in 1964 settled in Paton, Iowa where she and George worked together running a fertilizer plant in Lena, Iowa.
Virginia loved the small town, rural life and felt it was a great place to raise the couple's six children; Robbin, Rita, Judy, Jane, Virginia and George.
Her husband, George, passed away on December 26, 1977 from cancer, leaving four teenagers in high school. Virginia went back to school and received her GED, then began working several different jobs to support the family.
In 1982 she was introduced by mail to Albert H. Boekhoff, CW04 Retired Army. They were married on September 12, 1982 in Paton. They built a home north of Paton where she lived the rest of her life. Al passed away in September of 1993 from ALS.
Virginia loved gardening, cooking, baking, and sewing, making many of the clothes her children wore. She was an extraordinary quilter who could take ordinary fabric and make it into a work of art. She very much enjoyed being involved in her church, Salem United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of the UMW.
Virginia passed away on March 29, 2012 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa of cancer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Annie; husbands, George Walker and Albert Boekhoff, and siblings, Betty Watts, Warren Croghan, and Dennis Croghan.
