Audie Baker Crockett, age 94, died Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 8 at Elm Street Church of Christ in Coleman with Joe Hailey officiating. Interment will be in the Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Audie was born May 8, 1916 in the Owens Community in Brown County, Texas, a daughter of Charlie Baker and Ada Straley Baker. She graduated from Blanket High School and then attended Daniel Baker College in Brownwood for two years on a scholarship. While at Daniel Baker, she studied drama and acted in several productions there. She completed her B.S. degree at Howard Payne University and also a Master of Education degree.
On June 28, 1936 she married Aubrey Crockett in Owens and he preceded her in death on September 27, 2000. She taught first grade at West Ward in Coleman for 20 years. Audie was an active member of Elm Street Church of Christ where she helped with Bible classes. She also helped with VBS where she portrayed in costume Little Miss Muffet. For a number of years Audie china painted with Alma Graves at her studio in Brownwood. Aubrey and Audie Crockett were named "Citizens of the Year" in 1999 by the Coleman Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include two daughters, Jaydena and husband Jerry Wagstaff of El Paso and Jean Ellen and husband Arthur Cantwell of Brownwood; one son, Jack and wife Teri Crockett of Midland; one sister, Von and husband Louis Panzino of Fort Worth; a sister-in-law, Juanita Bailey of Brownwood; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, Charles Baker and Earl Baker and a son, Joe E. Crockett in 2006.
Family visitation will be held on Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan, Coleman, Texas.
