Elizabeth "Betty" L. Arthur, 80, of Brazil, passed away at the Exceptional Living Center of Brazil, Jan. 22, 2011.
She was born Feb. 28, 1930 in Greene County to Russell and Manda (VanDevender) Crites.
She graduated from Bloomfield High School. On Feb. 2, 1949 she married Robert "Joe" Arthur.
Betty and her husband Joe owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Brazil, which was located in the Shaw Appliance building on U.S. 40. As the business grew and expanded, the store was moved to the location of the present Goodwill Store from 1964 until it closed in 1995. For many years it was one of the top 10 Western Auto stores in the nation through good customers and employees. The Arthurs won many trips in and out of the U.S. through purchases with Western Auto.
Betty enjoyed spending time with her cats, and especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed cooking and gardening. Betty will be remembered as a competitive euchre player and for her delicious sugar cookies.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe Arthur; brother Russell "Junior" Crites; and a sister, Bea Daubenspeck.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan Arthur and Nancy Pell and husband Dan all of Brazil; 5 grandchildren, David and Shelly Elder of San Marcos, CA, Amanda Elder of Berkeley, CA, Jim Pell and Ann Pell of Brazil and a great-granddaughter Elizabeth Elder; brother Ken Crites and wife Margaret of Camby; a sister Roberta Neill of Bloomfield, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Service will be at Lawson -- Miller Chapel in Brazil on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Bob Kumpf officiating.
Committal services will be held at the Prairie Chapel Cemetery near Newberry, IN at 3 p.m. Visitation will be at the funeral home, Wednesday from 11 a.m. until time of services.
