Dyersburg Funeral Home Obituary
Dyersburg, TN
March 13, 2012

Thomas "Roland" Criswell, got to see Jesus Christ face to face when he left this earth. He leaves behind his wife of fifty-eight years, Joice Miller Criswell. Celebrating his life are also his daughter and her husband, Ricki and Larry Elks of Jackson, TN and Roland's two sons and their wives --Tommy and Kay Criswell and Shawn and Karen Criswell (all of Dyersburg). Joining in this celebration of the life of this well-loved man are also his grand-children: Renee Bassham, Leigh Anna Veal, Ryan Elks, Joshua Pruett, Leah Jacobs, Selina Purvis, Ashley Stevens, Matt Willis, Jonathan Criswell and Justin Criswell; plus eleven great-grand-children and many loving nieces and nephews.

Roland was born April 30, 1929 in Obion County to Laby and Jettie Criswell. He had eight brothers and sisters. Leaving this world before him was his sisters -- Mildred Whittle; Virginia Suratt and Jewell Higgins and two brothers – Joe Criswell and John Criswell. Surviving siblings are his brother Glen Criswell of Dyersburg and sister Gwen Aycock and Stella June Hopper who are now living in Texas.

Roland's life was full of adventures and accomplishments. His varied careers included being a professional wrestler, a brick mason and an X-ray tech for a pipeline. As a young man, for a time, he was even a real cowboy! Roland also served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. All who knew him often heard him share how his heart was touched by the children he encountered during his tour there. His hunting and fishing expeditions took him to Canada, Alaska, Montana and many other wonderful places. He was very proud of the trophies that filled his den.

Roland loved his family. He loved his country and fought for its freedom. He was proud to be a Mason. He treasured his many friends. However; Roland, who was a member of McCullough's Chapel Baptist Church, would always say his greatest accomplishment was to be a Christian. For that reason, those who love him are now able to celebrate!

At Dyersburg Funeral Home, visitation will be Wednesday, March 14th 5:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Funeral Services will be Thursday, March 15th at 1:00 P.M. following a visitation of family and friends beginning at 11:00 A.M. Presiding over the service will be Bro. Ronnie Turner of Second Baptist and Bro. Stan Young of McCullough Chapel. Pallbearers will be Matt Willis, Justin Veal, Lanny Long, Joe House, Sam Warren and Keith Hawkins.
