Helen L. Black, 89, New Waverly, passed away peacefully at 3:26p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009 at Home Hospital in Lafayette.
She was born in Cass County on Jan. 27, 1920 to Claudius Frank and Bessie Logan Cripe. Helen married Kenneth N. Black in Logansport on July 1, 1943, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 1998.
Helen graduated from New Waverly High School in 1937 and North Manchester College in 1941, She taught school for 39 years and retired as an English teacher at the Peru Junior High School in 1980. She was a member of the New Waverly United Methodist Church, the Indiana Retired Teacher's Association and the Cass County Retired Teacher's Association.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Mary Cripe and Ruby Black, both of New Waverly; a niece, Theresa Sweet and husband Tim, Walton; nephews Todd Cripe and wife Kathy, New Waverly, Steven Black and wife Kathleen, Logansport, and Eric Cripe and wife Peggy, Sandy, Utah; a cousin, Nancy Moss, Galveston; and several great nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Kenneth, and brother, Wayne A. Cripe.
A service celebrating the life of Helen L. Black will be held at 10:30a.m. Wednesday at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru, with Pastor Alan Downing officiating.
Burial will be at Ever Rest Memorial Park, Cass County.
