"John Crew was born, in Scotland, of Quaker parentage, but was read-out of the Society, when he married, Anna Insley, who was a member of the Methodist Church. He was distinguished, for those sterling qualities of mind, and that incorruptible integrity of character, which have always marked the Society, of which he was a birthright member. His wife was of Scotch-Irish descent, a woman of fervid piety, and charitable disposition. She was pre-eminently a good woman, devotedly attached to her husband, whose death she only survived two months, being broken-down with grief at his loss."
