Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 12th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 11, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in Company K on September 4, 1862. He served through the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. In that engagement, he was detailed to assist the gunners of Battery A, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery. He was killed on the third day of the Battle (July 3) while performing this duty.
