SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Mabel Brown, 92, departed this life on January 8, 2013, at the Center for Hospice Care.
She was born January 22, 1920, in Egremont, Mississippi, to Judge Bennett and Georgia Crawford. She was educated in Egremont schools. Mabel met Harrison Brown and they united in Holy Matrimony on February 26, 1940. She moved to South Bend, Indiana, and was employed by the University of Notre Dame, Holy Cross House. Mabel Brown was a founding member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church and was a faithful member until her death. As a member she was a part of many organizations but especially a committed member of the Usher Board. Mabel loved her community; she donated to several charities and was a faithful contributor to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Mabel Brown had great faith in God. She was well-known for her classy dress, high standards, and encouraging words of wisdom. She was a world traveler, visiting Israel and other countries as well as traveling to many states throughout the USA with the "Fellowship Bus" of South Bend, Indiana. Mabel Brown loved her family; she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Georgia and Frank Murphy; her grandsons, Ricky (Sue) Murphy and Andre (Marcee) Murphy; her loving family: Buddy Milon, Vera Breeding, Aaron (Betty) Austin, Essie Milton, Ernestine Hutchins, Mae (Larry) Hall, Charles Curry; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Mabel Brown was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and many aunts & uncles. Funeral services for Mabel will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013, in Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, 1232 E. Bronson Street. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and services at 12 noon.
Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
