Dennis Craver killed in Vietnam hostile action

Centerville - Sgt. Dennis Craver, 23, well known and will liked Centerville man, lost his life in Vietnam April 26, 1971.
Born November 22, 1947 in Centerville, he was the son of Ralph and Marie Stirts Craver.
On November 23, 1969 he was united in marriage with Chris Crego at the First Methodist Church in Centerville. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
He was a graduate of both Centerville High School and Centerville Community College. He had attended Central Missouri State College at Warrensburg, Mo., for a year and a half before entering the service March 10, 1970 at Fort Lewis, Washington.
He was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia for NCO school and later to Vietnam on March 2, 1971. He was based at Camp Evans in the vicinity of Hue, south of the DMZ.
His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. V.J. Craver and his grandfather Elmer Stirts preceded him in death.
Survivors besides his widow include a baby son, Charles Thomas Craver, of Centerville; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Craver, Centerville; one brother, Tom Craver, who is serving in the Armed Forces, stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia; one sister Patti at home and his grandmother, Mrs. Elmer Stirts of Cincinnati.
The casket is being returned to Centerville. Memorial services will be announced later from the Miller - Wherle Funeral Home.
Mr. and Mrs. Craver had received a letter from their son dated April 22 in Vietnam. The letter was received Thursday, the day they received word of his death.
In the letter he had told his parents he was being sent with his battalion to "Firebase Whipcord" one of the Vietnam hot spots.
He had earlier this week forwarded a letter to his father, Ralph, telling that he had been in action almost since his arrival in Vietnam.
Details concerning his death are unknown at this time. It is presumed that while at "Firebase Whipcord," he was killed by hostile enemy fire. He was rushed to an Army hospital but doctors were unable to save his life.
