Parents are Dr. James F. Cravens & Flora (Colby) Cravens. (Flora died March 22, 1909 in Spirit Lake Iowa and burial was made in Indiana. Her obituary is published in the Spirit Lake Beacon, March 26, 1909).
Husband of Mrs. Anna E. (Francis) Copley
(Married in 1907)
This community was shocked last Friday by a message from Spirit Lake telling of the tragic death of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Cravens, of that place, at Alexandria, near Anderson, Indiana.
Mr. and Mrs. Cravens left about a week before in their automobile for a trip overland to Buffalo, New York. They were stopping at several places along the route. It seems as they were running into the town of Alexandria, Indiana, their auto was struck by an interurban car, the auto wrecked and Mr. and Mrs. Cravens were killed instantly. Both bodies were badly mangled and Mr. Cravens' head was nearly severed from his body. Just how the accident occurred will probably never be known, as Mr. and Mrs. Cravens were both dead when the train crew reached them.
The bodies were brought to Spirit Lake where funeral services were held at the late home last Monday afternoon. The sermon was given by Rev. E. W. Brown, of Knoxville, Iowa, a former pastor of the Presbyterian church, at Spirit Lake, assisted by Rev. E. M. Bell, the present pastor. Delegations from the Masonic lodges at Milford, Lake Park and Estherville were in attendance and the services at the cemetery were in charge of that order. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in the county.
