"Alfred M Cravens Dead
Alfred M Cravens , one of Scottsburg's leading citizens, and for fifty years a merchant, passed away at 6 P.M. Saturday, aged 79 years, his birthday having been Devember 6th. He was the son of William Cravens and wife, pioneers of Scott County. For many years he was a partner in business with his father-in-law, Francis M. Garriott, and after Mr. Garriott's death, Mr. Cravens built a store room on the south side of the public square and he and his brother-in-law, James T. Gardner, opened a hardware store, still conducted as "Cravens and Garder."
His wife, died many years ago and since her death he and his daughter, Miss Bertha, lived in the homestead.
He is survived by five sons, Cecil, Garriott, Earl, Frank, and Landry Cravens, and one daughter, Miss Bertha Cravens. He is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Mark Storen, Mrs. Robert Samples, Mrs. James T Gardner and Mrs. Dr. W. L. McClain.
He was a member of the M.E. church for many years, but in later years had affiliated with the Presbyterian church. As a business man, and citizen, he was highly regarded, and his influence for good was a community asset.
The funeral was held Sunday, with burial at the Scottsburg Cemetery, after a short funeral service at the home."
