Clarence L. Crandall, born Sept. 26, 1911, in Thatcher, Territory of Arizona, was the eldest child of Stanley L. and Elizabeth (Claridge) Crandall, the original proprietors of Crandall's Pharmacy in Safford.

Clarence attended the public schools in Safford, Gila College in Thatcher and The University in Washington, D.C. He graduated from the FBI Academy at Quantico, Va., and thereupon became associated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a special agent.

Prior to entering on duty with this organization in 1935, he spent three years in Germany as a missionary for the LDS Church (1932-1935). There he witnessed the nefarious machinations of Adolf Hitler unfold and naturally assimilated a background in German affairs that led to his placement with the federal government. He first held the position of translator for the FBI and, as such, became a factor in the prosecution of espionage cases affecting the internal security of the United States. He was sent into the field as a special agent after having attended the FBI Academy. His assignments were in Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; Chicago; El Paso, Texas; Santa Fe, N.M.; Phoenix; and sporadically in other areas across the nation as the exigency occurred.

He was trained especially in the nation's internal security affairs but also in civil rights matters, election law matters and investigative techniques. At the time of his retirement in December 1974, he was a police school instructor and public relations man for the Bureau. His tenure with the U.S. government lasted 39-1/2 years.

Clarence and his wife, the former Jewel Mae Jacobson, have resided in complete retirement in Thatcher since October 1983. They have six children, 36 grandchildren and 72 great-grandchildren. They married in the Mesa Temple on June 14, 1938.

Services for Clarence were conducted Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, at 10 a.m. in the Thatcher LDS Stake Center. Visitation was Thursday, Oct. 11, 6-8 p.m. at the Stake Center. Interment was in the Safford Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to McDougal's Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
